The draw is in...

...and we are fucked. The draw for the 2006 World Cup in Germany happened yesterday, and it didn't go to well for the United States. We drew into Group E against Ghana, Italy, and the fucking Czech Republic. The Czech squad is ranked second in the world. Italy is ranked 12th. We are ranked eigth. Ghana is a throwaway team. We drew one of the most difficult groups in the competition. Since only two teams will advance from this group, we are looking at some real tough competition come next summer.

Even if the US manages to take a second place position behind another team, we would then have to face the winner of Group F in the next round. Since that is Brazil's group, everyone already knows the winner of Group F. The United States MUST take first place in the group stage to have any hope of winning this cup.

The United States NEEDS this win. Soccer is nothing in this country, but a major international victory like this would boost the sport greatly. The recentish Los Angeles vs New England MLS final was sparsely attended and barely watched. I watched, hoping "my" team would win the final but they didn't.

Come on United States, pump yourself up for a major series of victories. Settle for nothing less than third, but shoot for first. We have a chance, for the first time ever we have a legitimate chance to take home the World Cup. I will watch EVERY USA game in the Cup, LIVE. I will be cheering our team on to victory from thousands of miles away.

(No, I don't usually cheer for us in any sport. But most Americans hate this sport, and we are major underdogs. Plus the rest of the world hates us in this sport. That leads to automatic US support.)
