Carolus Magnus

I find it unusual that I can so easily jump into writing an eleven-page paper about something like the accuracy of Einhard's biography of Charlemagne, yet how begrudgingly I write out a 500-word opinion article. Part of that stems from me not being able to take a single stance on any issue, and part of that stems from my passion for history.

I should've been a historian. Though being a journalist is quite fun and you meet a hell of a lot of interesting people. Historians are usually dullards and boring, self-blinded old men. A journalism degree will get me anything and it is wicked easy. A history degree would have gotten me instant poverty and no qualification to do anything. So I've picked up a minor in history.
I have a passion for history, and a loathing for modernity.

Pure Christmas Energy

Santa Klaus urinates pure Christmas energy.

So my mother went crazy with the decorations again. This year the Christmas decorations were actually up the day BEFORE Thanks-taking. It was a little unusual to eat Thanksgiving dinner surrounded by a mix of Christmas, Snowmen and Thanksgiving decorations. Still, that's how it was, that's how she rolls. The volume of decorations is, sadly, down from previous years. Still, there are a shatload of Christmas paraphernalia adorning the house.

I will be honest, I am the biggest critic of the decorations, but it's good to have them back. It's that month long period where the house is all crazed and Christmasy. She does a good job, gets into the decorating. It beats the snowmen, which are just cold reminders of long Maine winters. It beats the rabbits and bears, which are just wretched.

The tree is up as well. They got it like two days after Thanksgiving. The decorating process hasn't started, but once it does the Christmas decoration world domination plan will be complete.

I continue to be a non-participant in this decorating, Christmas season madness.

Didn't you hear? Evolution is a mystery.

So there's the Survivor Series PPV tonight. I would say that it snuck out of nowhere, but while watching the Eddie tributes I heard about it. Apparently the theme is Raw vs Smackdown. Usually this would be kind of interesting since the people from the two shows almost never face off, but the teams are kind of... bad. Sure, if Eddie was still alive we'd get our first taste ever of Eddie vs Michaels. But he's not, so we get our first taste ever of Lashley vs Masters. Oh so very exciting. Let me tell you the teams now.
On Raw we start with Shawn Michaels. Great choice, one I would have made myself. Big Show and Kane follow. Understandable choices and believable, you need some power. Carlito. What the fuck, Carlito?! Stop trying to force this worthless Puerto Rican down our throats. We barely accept him as it is, his gimmick is a bore. Use him in some other capacity, but in his current state noone cares. And last and least we have... Chris Masters. WHAT THE FUCK! Nobody, and I do mean nobody, gives a shit about this worthless mass of muscles. Vince has always had a thing for bodybuilders, but COME ON. Masters can't wrestle for shit, maybe in 1920 he could've passed off as decent but not now. Constantly putting him in the main event will warp the mind of the fans, however, and soon they'll be all like "Chris Masters is the most skilled wrestler alive, the best submissionist."

Smackdown's team is a little, how shall we say, crappier. It's led by Bautista, the half-Filipino champion. This is an idiotic move, he's injured and can contribute little. Still, I guess you need him. We follow him with Randy Orton. Good choice, beat the 'Taker and is a former champion. Orton is followed by JBL. I don't particularly care for JBL and I don't agree with his inclusion, but the fans buy it so whatever. Up next is Rey Mysterio. This is seriously cool. Despite being FAR smaller than anyone else in this match, he really is standing with the heavyweights. His inclusion in this is hopefully a mark that he will be shooting for that gold some day. The last member of this team is someone that I've never seen before this last week. His name is Bobby Lashley, though you may as well call him Black Brock Lesnar. He's just some muscle-freak OVW grad. Seemingly, he's only been on TV for 3 weeks, but is already a "major player" on Smackdown. Whatever fuck you.

Oh and Kurt Angle goes up against John Cena for the real WWE Championship. My peep Shawn Daivari is the ref in this match, and I have a feeling that Angle may take this one. His last title reign was what, two years ago? Three? Go Angle. If Angle doesn't take it tonight look for Cena to have a one-year title reign.

The E needs some bloody stables. These are usually hit or miss, but they the ability to do it right. ROH is building its product around strong stables feuding. Rottweilers, Embassy, GenNext are all strong stables. Sure the dynamic is different and stables exist to continue feuds when certain wrestlers can't make shows. But the quality is there. The E needs a good old fashioned stable feud. Evolution was a great stable, four world champions. They didn't have any direct opponents, but they were quality because they dominated. Another dominating stable is what the E needs. Another DX or Four Horsemen. Yeah it'd be hard to do that, but they have to try. Stop looking for the next Rock, Cena's all you have. And PLEASE stop looking for the next Lesnar, he's the ONLY successful muscle freak ever. No mas no mas.

Till next time, I hate the E.

Principal: Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Billy Madison: Okay, a simple no would've done just fine.

Inner Voice, Outer Voice

I've noticed that I never actually speak the way I think. It's really quite a bother. In my mind I lay out complex sentances using words that only an Oxford graduate would know, yet I never manage to speak it in the same manner. Let's look at an example, shall we?

Mind, "Twas a transcendant establishment in which we engaged in our conversations on the Fourth Crusade and the establishment of the Empire of the Latins."

Mouth, "That place where we talked about shit was awesome."

Oh the vulgarities of my common speach. My head is an 1890s gentleman, my mouth is a pirate.

When you think things out too much you are usually overprepared and have thought of too many possibilites or scenarios. You get blindsided when a situation develops differently than you thought it would. I have been fixing this problem.

Another problem is that I don't write fast enought to keep up with my thoughts. I'm a very quick thinker, and the flood of ideas and thoughts that comes when I get writing is very bothersome. I can't keep up with my thoughts and certain ideas I forget about. Usually they are only sidethoughts, but still they could've added some value to what I was writing.

I deal. As I deal with everything, I deal.

Winter II: Electric Boogaloo

And here it is again, Winter motherfscker. That's right, the snow doth return. After a mild summer and a short mild autumn, that evil bitch winter has decided to show up again. You see I consider the day of the first snow after all the leaves are dead to be the true first day of winter. It's winter because it's cold, bleak and snowy. As you can likely guess, the snows have returned. Oh how I have not missed the snow. It was only a dusting today... but how much longer before the main wave hits us, the first invasion of snow. Days? Weeks? A month? It won't be long before we get a storm, and it'll be constant snow.

Don't worry, Winter will only last 8 months.

Had my first 'gNog the other day. Egg nog for those of you who... aren't listening to me think. Another sign of winter's arrival.

I finally picked up A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin. Well I didn't pick it up exactly, I sort of conned my brother into buying it. Either way, I'm reading the book. Even though some of my favorite characters are left out this time around, it should still be very good. I haven't been waiting as long as others have for this one though. I've only been waiting a year, some have been waiting five years. That makes me laugh.

I will require a fifth year at the university, I've discovered. Doesn't bother me so much, gives me time to save up money. I'm also picking up a minor or two. History for sure, international relations maybe. How joyous...

Oh and by the way, Christian Cage kicks your ass. Captain Charisma is now ten times cooler than before, just by jumping ship.

Eddie Guerrero

It's taken some time for me to get around and write this piece. Last Sunday, Eddie Guerrero died. When I first read this news I was most certainly in shock. I sat there and felt myself sinking, you know the feeling. I immediately went to wwe.com and got confirmation that Eddie had died. As a fan of wrestling this was something that really hurt.

Eddie was something really special in this world of wrestling. When I heard the name Eddie Guerrero, I knew I was in for something good. He was able to pick me up when I watched his matches, because he always managed to be entertaining. I knew if Eddie was on the show, there was going to be something good. Eddie was one of the pillars of wrestling that I had and continue to have so much respect for. He would draw you in with his charisma and keep you watching with his incredible in ring ability. He was a highlight of the WWE, from his work in the "Smackdown Six", which was one of the greatest periods of wrestling, to his incredible feud with Angle, to the unbelievable ladder match and feud with RVD, to "the moment" at Wrestlemania XX. When Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit embraced, both holding world titles, after Wrestlemanis XX, I saw the true heart of wrestling. It is one of the greatest moments in wrestling history.

Eddie Guerrero was one of the great wrestlers of this era. From his incredible work as Black Tiger II in Japan to his championship run in the WWE, he was always putting on incredible matches. I always found his matches to be exciting, energetic and extremely well put together. You could tell that he had his heart in this business. He cared about wrestling and he was in the WWE for the business, not the money. Every match was as important as the last to Eddie. He put as much effort in his Heat matches against jobbers as he did his main events against Lesnar and Angle.

I had the honor to see Eddie Guerrero in person three times. I will especially remember the final time I saw him, earlier this year. He faced Rey Mysterio in the match of the night. It was a classic brawl, ECW style. It was a lowly house show and Eddie bled ungodly amounts of blood. He was putting his heart into a match that only some 2000-3000 people would see, though I suspect he would have put the same effort into a match 2 or 3 people would have seen.

When I watched Raw on Monday there were tears. When I watched Smackdown! on Friday there were tears. Eddie Guerrero is a legend. He was the World Champion. He was one of the greatest wrestlers I have ever seen. These words I have written don't do you proper tribute, but you have your friends and family to do that for you. All I can say is that you earned my respect. I will forever be a fan of Eddie Guerrero.

Wrastlyng

Time to talk wrestling since I haven't in quite a time, and talking about myself depresses me.

Christian quit the WWE is the biggest news. This is perhaps the greatest move any wrestler could make and one many have been calling for someone to make. For perhaps the most popular heel in the company besides Triple H to have been dropped from the Main Event scene directly to the jobber fest that is Velocity was an absolute tragedy. Christian was popular and successful, so the E naturally tried to kill that as quickly as possible. Usually the wrestler flounders until they become a joke, but Christian was sick of it and said "fuck you" to Vinnie and his gang of idiots. Now Christian is TNA bound and where he will be much more appreciated. I see a NWA World Heavyweight title reign in the future of Jay "Christian" Reso.

Ring of Honor, a company I love, now a company that is saying "fuck you" directly to all northern New England fans. ROH is cancelling the January Boston show and has decided not to run Boston as a venue anymore. I don't know whether this is due to the quality of fans, which shouldn't matter, or the lack of a base building in the area, which also shouldn't matter. Abandoning the fans that put you where you are will only create resentment. Moving out to the midwest will alienate east coast fans. At a time Ring of Honor should be looking to expand, they are narrowing their focus. Don't give up on us Ring of Honor.

Akira Taue won the GHC Heavyweight title from "Mr. Failure" Takeshi Rikio. I couldn't be happier with this win. This takes the belt of an incredibly lackluster champion and gets it to someone that sorely deserved a title reign. Taue can still go despite his age and condition. Now he can defend it once or twice before dropping it onto a long term champion, most likely Jun Akiyama. Whatever happens, it's great for Taue to finally be the champion again, now that it's been nine years since his Triple Crown reign.

Wrestling keeps me afloat. So does watching movies, but wrestling keeps me sane.

Langley Institute for Pirate Ghosts

Oranges portray an unhealthy image for other fruits to follow. It's just Hollywood cramming that image down our throats until you have apples and grapes that want to be oranges.

Damn you Hollywood, damn you.

Truth in Comic Form

This comic strip is a pretty accurate description of me, just replace the name "Ricky" with the name "Dan". When I first saw it I couldn't stop laughing simply because it so perfectly applied to me.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Full credit to the guy who actually made this comic, the information is on the image so look it up. However, I've never read any strip other than this one.

Finally... November

I'll tell you, it's about damned time that October ended. That was a bad month, a terrible month in fact. Hopefully the arbitrary change of months will lead to an improvement in quality of life.

Fuck you October 2005, you were the worst month ever.

Still can't sleep. Too much on my mind, too much. I blame October.
